A programme of archaeological testing was undertaken as part of seeking planning permission to build an extension to a dwelling house and undertake associated site works at Ballinwing, Carrick-on-Shannon. The works were within the vicinity of a ringfort (LE027-045) and enclosure (LE027-046). The ringfort – a promontory fort – is sited c. 80m to the northeast whilst the enclosure is similar distance to the southwest. The promontory fort is located on a commanding site, with a direct view of Sheemore Hill to the south. The enclosure, on the opposite side of the public road to the development site, comprises a grass-covered circular platform with a diameter of c. 20m and slight scarp.
Two test trenches were opened. No archaeological remains and/or features were exposed in either trench.
