Archaeological testing was undertaken as part of seeking planning permission to construct a dwelling house and undertake associated site works at Derrykearn, Abbeyleix. The site is located within close proximity to a ringfort (LA023-007001) and a church (LA023-007002). These monuments are located c. 70m to the south of the development site, on the opposite side of the public road of which the site fronts. The ringfort was removed in recent times when a dwelling house was built on the site. Regarding the church, there is tradition such a monument had been located with the interior of the ringfort. This building was also demolished when the dwelling house was built.
A total of four test trenches were sited on the imprint of the proposed works. Other than the uncovering of the two features, a straight-sided linear drainage feature and the remains of a field boundary, no archaeological remains and/or features were uncovered in the course of the testing works.
