Archaeological test-excavations were carried out at Kilcoke, Co. Laois as part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment related to a proposed single residential development. A portion of the north-eastern boundary of the proposed development site borders the edge of the Zone of Notification for a Recorded Monument (Moated Site LS028-005).
Five test-trenches were excavated across the proposed development area. The trenches measured between 25–45m in length, 2m in width and 0.42–0.58m in depth.
The general stratigraphy comprised topsoil consisting of a friable mid-brown silty clay, which overlay an orange-brown silty sand with occasional small to medium angular stones, and areas of mid-gray gravelly subsoil.
A gravel track (likely the one recorded on the first-edition 6-inch OSi map) was apparent in the northern portion of Trench 5.
No features or objects of archaeological significance were uncovered in the course of the testing.
