Archaeological testing was carried out over the course of two days from 17 April 2023 at Poulgour, County Kilkenny, using a mechanical excavator fitted with a flat grading bucket. Approximately two thirds of the proposed development area was subject to geophysical survey and archaeological testing in 2018, but nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
Archaeological test trenching of the remaining portion of the development area, identified two areas of potential archaeological significance. These areas were classified as Archaeological Area 1 and 2 (AA1 & AA2). Features recorded within AA1 consist of an irregular linear feature and a sub-circular feature. Features recorded within AA2 comprise an irregular curvilinear feature. Features within AA1 and AA2 all contained analogous fill material, containing heat-affected clay and varying charcoal inclusions. It is possible that these features represent small kilns but no dating material was identified during testing. These types of features have the potential to date from prehistory through to the post-medieval period.
Three features identified were interpreted as agricultural field drainage features, and not of archaeological significance.
