Archaeological monitoring was carried out in December 2022 and January 2023 at Butt’s Green near St Canice’s Cathedral and adjacent to the Saint Vincent De Paul shop located in the middle of Kilkenny city. Due to the confined nature of the site a mini-digger was used for the removal of topsoil. The topsoil consisted of a dark grey sandy clay with frequent inclusions of mid-sized stone, the occasional inclusion of red brick and modern deposits. Buried services were encountered during monitoring and the site was reduced to the natural gravel deposit. Spoil was periodically inspected for metal finds throughout monitoring of site reduction. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered.
