Archaeological monitoring of geotechnical site investigations (SI) works was carried out in advance of the proposed Kilkenny City Public Realm Urban Renewal Scheme at locations in Market Yard, Market Square and St Kieran’s Street, in the townland of Gardens (St Mary’s Parish), Kilkenny City. Site investigations consisted of ten slit trenches and one trial pit (A proposed borehole in Market Square was not carried out in 2023).
A cobbled surface of post-medieval or early modern date was exposed and preserved, in Market
Square (ST09), along with layers of mortar-rich brick and stone rubble in garden soils in several trenches (ST10/TP01). However, layers of concrete covering live services for utilities were exposed in the upper levels of the majority of SI trenches, preventing further deep excavation. As a result, no archaeological objects, features or deposits were identified during the archaeological monitoring.
