Archaeological monitoring of all maintenance and repair works to the Shee Almshouse
continued in 2023 and was carried out intermittently between January and August (see also 2022:307).
Monitoring was undertaken within and surrounding the Shee Almshouse which is a Recorded Monument (KK019-026100-) in the ownership of the local authority and subject to a Preservation Order (PO) (20/1976); it is also listed on the Record of Protected Structures (RPS) for Kilkenny City (R167). All works to the Shee Almshouse were carried out under Section 14 of the National Monuments Act 1930–2014. The development was carried out in the Zone of Notification for Kilkenny City (RMP KK019-026----) in the townland of Gardens, St Mary’s Parish.
The development works comprised maintenance and repairs to the interior and exterior of the
building, including the walls, roof and drainage. This included the installation of new draught-proof
entrance lobbies, heating, lighting and security systems within the building. No groundworks were
undertaken as part of the conservation works. One reused fragment of medieval tracery was identified
within the front façade of the building. This was recorded and preserved in situ.
