Stage (iii) Excavations were undertaken at Ballyconra 6 as part of the N77 Ballyragget Village to Ballynaslee Road Improvement Scheme, Co. Kilkenny.
Ballyconra 6 consisted of a linear arrangement of small vernacular buildings set into a gravel bank fronting onto a local laneway (known as Butler’s Lane). The extent of the site was assessed during Stage (i)e Built Heritage Survey undertaken by AMS (O’Flynn 2023). The on-site Stage (iii) Excavation Services at Ballyconra 6 were conducted between 20 February–3 March 2023.
The site at Ballyconra 6 consisted of an extant two-bay, single-storey building with double-pitched roof of corrugated iron and extensions to the east and west. Excavations revealed an earlier phase of activity approximating to that recorded on the first-edition six-inch OS map, surveyed 1838. A cobbled yard was exposed at the eastern extent, with an earlier cobble layer beneath. A partial flag floor was identified below the concrete floor within the eastern extension. A single course wall was recorded below the concrete floor at the western end of the site. Eighteen artefacts were found at Ballyconra 6, all of which were post-medieval or modern in origin.
