Archaeological monitoring of geotechnical site investigations took place at Abbey Quarter, Kilkenny, under Ministerial Consent issued to Kilkenny County Council, adjacent to St Francis’ Abbey (National Monument No. 72; RMP KK019-0261201-) and within the Zone of Notification for Kilkenny City (RMP KK019-026----). The site is located within the former Smithwick's (Diageo) Brewery site, dating from the 1790s to 2010.
Site investigations comprised four probe holes, measuring 0.1m wide and up to 2m deep. Works took place in advance of the proposed Abbey Quarter Urban Park and Urban Street development. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered.
