Archaeological test trenching was carried out on the site at Lumper Lane/New Road, Urlingford, Co. Kilkenny. A total of 8 trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. The test trenches were excavated down to a natural that varied between a grey silty sand and an orangish-grey silty sand. Modern rubbish with frequent iron waste was recorded in all the trenches, especially Trench 3. A modern northwest to southeast-aligned field ditch was recorded at the southern ends of Trenches 1, 2 and 4. A section through ditch
C3 recovered a fragment of red brick and a sherd of white glazed ceramic sherd. Other potential features included a furrow, C6, and a linear feature, C7, in Trench 1, a post-hole, C9, in Trench 3 and a pit, C8, in Trench 4. All contained modern inclusions.
The archaeological assessment of the site is now complete. The investigation failed to identify any archaeological features, structures or deposits across the site. Therefore, no further archaeological work is recommended.
