Archaeological monitoring of watermains replacement was carried out on Dublin Road, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. A section of this work took place within the outer limits of the Zone of Notification associated with a complex of five recorded monuments, the Magdalene church site (KK028-038001-) and graveyard (KK028-038002-), which include an enclosure (KK028-038003-), leper hospital (KK028-038004-) and architectural fragment (doorway) (KK028-038005-).
Monitoring of groundworks, comprising the excavation of a watermains trench generally measuring 0.6m wide by 1.2m deep, took place over the period 17-19 January 2023; approximately 70 linear meters were monitored.
The stratigraphy was consistent throughout, comprising 0.1m of tarmac overlying 0.2m of hardcore on subsoil comprising moderately compact, orange-brown sandy silt with frequent small- and medium-sized sub-angular stones. Fragments of red brick were visible in places on the Dublin Road (R448) immediately below the hardcore.
Nothing of archaeological interest was noted in the monitored excavations, including within the Zone of Notification.
