Archaeological test trenching was carried out on the site at Southgreen Road, Kildare, following a geophysical survey (22R0414) as features of potential archaeological significance were recorded. A total of 20 test trenches were excavated within the site. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total, 1900m of linear trenches were excavated. The test trenches targeted anomalies identified during the geophysical survey. The test trenches were excavated to the natural subsoil which was exposed at a depth of 0.3-2.5m.
The natural subsoil was exposed at a depth of 0.3-0.6 in Trench 1 and Trenches 12-21, while in the northern portion of the site trenches were deeper due to made-up ground being introduced in 2022 and measured between 0.5-2.5m (Trenches 4-10) in depth. Trenches 1 and 2 were located within an area of increased archaeological
potential and were excavated within the presence of an osteologist (Glenn Gibney). The only features exposed were linear features which represented former field boundaries that corresponded with geophysical anomalies and were visible on aerial imagery and on OS mapping.
No features of archaeological significance were exposed, and no finds of archaeological significance were recovered.
