A programme of archaeological test trenching was undertaken in the townland of Garrane, Tralee, Co. Kerry. These works were undertaken for Kerry County Council and were part of the Tralee Northern Relief Road.
The section of the Tralee Northern Relief Road from Listellick South to Forge Cross runs from the eastern side of Listellick South townland, through the southern part of the townland of Garrane to the western side of Laharn townland, on the north side of the town of Tralee.
An archaeological impact statement was prepared on the route corridor from Listellick South to Forge Cross by the Kerry County archaeologist, Arts, Culture & Heritage Division, Kerry County Council. This report recommended pre-development archaeological testing under licence from the National Monuments Service.
Nineteen trenches were excavated, totalling 970 linear meters. Two areas of archaeological interest were identified; a prehistoric burnt mound (or fulacht fiadh) and a post-medieval/modern brick clamp.
