In association with the previous targeted test trenching focused on enclosure KE029-097 (Dunne et al. 2022), additional monitoring and wider testing was undertaken at Dromthacker in 2023 under an extension to licence 22E0887.
In January 2023 the pervasive scrub across the proposed development site was entirely cut-away under archaeological supervision. The vegetation clearance enabled the undertaking of a topographic survey and further facilitated geotechnical trial pits and wider testing. A total of 26 geotechnical trial pits were monitored across the site including additional pits investigated in abutting land to the west. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted.
Wider test trenching across the site was undertaken in March 2023. Thirty-eight test trenches (T1-T38) were excavated across the limits of the site. Excavated topsoil was an average depth 0.3m, comprising of dark brown soft and often rooty material. Topsoil overlay sterile light grey and generally impermeable clay subsoil with numerous modern agricultural drains manifest across the site. Nothing of an archaeological nature was found during testing.
