Archaeological test-excavations were carried out as part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment in relation to a proposed private residential development on a 0.39-hectare greenfield site at Raheen Kilkelly, Gort, Co. Galway.
The northern half of the site is located within the zone of archaeological potential (Zone ID: R128014) associated with a Ringfort/Rath (GA113-185----) and Souterrain (GA113-185001-).
Five test-trenches were excavated across the site. Trenches measured 22-47m in length, 2m in width and 0.35m in depth. Excavated material comprised a sod layer measuring 0.1m in depth and overlying 0.2m of a soft, mid-brown silty sand with moderate amounts of small-sized stones. The subsoil deposit comprised red-brown silty sand with occasional medium and large sub-angular stones. An undisturbed glacial deposit comprising a light grey sandy silt appeared in patches along the length of the cutting.
No archaeological finds features or deposits were found during testing.
