Archaeological monitoring was carried out at Caherroyn Road, Athenry, Co. Galway. It was proposed to demolish the existing derelict, school buildings, including all permanent and ancillary structures, existing footings and hardstanding within the site, as well as the removal of all disused on-site drainage system and utility services.
Monitoring was carried out on an intermittent basis between October and December 2023. The buildings were demolished, footings and hardstandings lifted, and the disturbed ground exposed below. Topsoil was seen in the form of sod which had an average depth of 0.24m. The ground was previously disturbed, and sod lay above previously disturbed ground. Natural subsoil was only seen in one spot where the original building had been cut into the slope at a depth of 0.48m. The natural subsoil was a greyish-brown silty sand.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed, and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete, and no further mitigation is necessary
