Archaeological monitoring of groundworks was undertaken for Uisce Éireann’s Water Network Programme at Shantalla Place and New Avenue Woods Water Mains Scheme in Galway City, Co. Galway. The monitoring was carried out at the edge of the Zone of Notification of one recorded archaeological site (earthwork – unclassified GA094-081), which lies in very close proximity (c.3m) to the works. The monitoring was carried out in order to identify any subsurface archaeological objects, features and deposits that may have been present. The trench monitored along New Avenue Road measured c.20m long, 0.7m wide and 1.2m deep. The stratigraphic sequence was comprised of 0.1m of tarmac, sealing a 0.4m deep layer of hardcore gravel and stones, overlying a 0.7m deep layer of natural subsoil which consisted of dark-brown silty clay containing frequent small–medium sub-angular stones and occasional large stones. As a precaution, a record was kept of the ground conditions to the north of Shantalla Place Road. The work took place along the footpath, the surface material was cleared to reveal pre-existing services at this location.

No potential archaeological objects, features, deposits, or human remains were noted during archaeological monitoring.
