Archaeological monitoring of groundworks was undertaken for Uisce Éireann’s Water Network Programme associated with the Baile an Logan Water Mains Scheme, Inverin, Co. Galway, within an Area of Archaeological Potential associated with two Cultural Heritage (CH) sites. The excavation of a continuous open-cut trench measuring 195 linear metres in total at the location of a well (CH01) and a settlement site at Ballinluggaun (CH02) was monitored under continuous supervision in order to identify any subsurface archaeological objects, features and deposits that may have been present. The trench at the location of CH02 to the south (Historic Settlement) measured 0.2–0.65m deep and consisted of a mix of black organic sandy-silt, medium to large stones over mid-yellow silty-sand and large boulders. The subsoil consisted of a mid-yellow silty-sand containing large patches of protruding bedrock. Over this was the original topsoil which consisted of black organic sandy-silt containing medium to large stones; this topsoil is possibly the result of a seaweed/sand mix produced in order to build up the soil. A light-yellowish grey-gravely sand overlay the original soil. A tarred surface overlay this in turn, with a second tarred surface then being laid directly on top of this. The road was elevated with a deeper layer of light yellowish-grey gravelly sand, laid to level off the road. This layer ranged in measurement from 0.05m to the north on the hill to 0.2m where the road levels out by the remains of the historic settlement (CH02).

No potential archaeological features or deposits were noted at this location during the works.
