Archaeological monitoring was carried out at a site at No. 2 Grand Canal Quay, Dublin 2. The monitoring followed a pre-demolition impact assessment report, which recorded the upstanding industrial structures on the site, and a post-demolition archaeological testing impact assessment report (Excavations Ref: 2022:602).

Archaeological monitoring did not reveal any features of archaeological potential. The site profile was generally consistent, comprising an overburden of industrial backfill with some red brick and stone fragments.  Numerous 19th-century pottery sherds were identified in the backfill material. This material overlay a light grey, smooth, alluvial marl with occasional oyster shell inclusions and, at its upper interface, a band of shell fragment (0.5–0.8m in width). No other inclusions were noted within this layer, which was uniform in composition and appearance throughout. Natural shaly and stony gravels were encountered at a depth of approximately 4.2m.

There was no evidence for any archaeological features, soils or finds within this deep alluvial layer.
