An archaeological assessment was carried out at Gollierstown, Co. Dublin over the course of ten days from 14 June 2023 in order to ascertain the potential impact of proposed development on the archaeological resource that may exist within the development area. Testing followed on from a geophysical survey and revealed three areas of archaeological potential.
The first comprised an area of possible medieval activity formed by a number of ditches, including a curvilinear ditch feature, and one undated pit. Crushed fragments of possible medieval pottery were recorded within both the curvilinear and linear ditch sections.
The second had a circular enclosure and an enclosing ditch, which may be early medieval or Bronze Age in date. The circular enclosure was clearly identified during geophysical survey. No internal features were recorded within the tested area of the enclosure interior. No dating material was recovered during testing.
The third comprised a sub circular spread of charcoal-rich material and heat shattered stones that likely represent the truncated remains of a burnt mound /fulacht fiadh, and may be Bronze Age in date.
