Archaeological ground investigations commenced in May 2023 and continued for four days, following on from an archaeological desktop assessment, which highlighted that the proposed development area lies partially within the zone of notification of archaeological potential for an 18th-century military camp (DU026-127). As such it was recommended that a metal detection survey and programme of archaeological test trenching be carried out in advance of a proposed attenuation pond development.
A strategic metal detection survey was conducted across the site prior to the commencement of test excavations, and continued throughout the duration of investigations. No finds of archaeological significance were identified by the metal detection survey.
Test trenching revealed evidence of a longstanding agricultural use of the land. Field drains and furrows were identified in seven of the ten trenches investigated. Three of the trenches were found to be archaeologically and historically sterile. No archaeological features or deposits were uncovered during test trenching
