Archaeological monitoring was undertaken at the site of a proposed development at Wellmount Road, Finglas, Dublin 11. The north-west part of the site lies within the zone of potential associated with monument DU014-066005. Monitoring was carried out on in January 2023 in the area of a proposed school extension along the north of the site. Two additional areas further south at the main school entrance and in the carpark were also monitored. However, there was no ground reduction or excavation at these latter locations as the works consisted of light landscaping only.
The foundation trenches to the north were excavated following the removal of a tarmac surface and a stone aggregate foundation with a combined depth of 0. 15m. The trenches were excavated to a depth varying between 0.6m and 1m through a deep layer of demolition rubble. This was more frequent to the northwest and represents the building debris from a convent/asylum that was demolished in the mid- to late twentieth century. Where exposed, the natural subsoil comprised a compact, light greyish-yellow clay with moderate amounts of sub-angular stone.
The monitoring failed to identify any archaeological finds, features, structures, or deposits across the site.
