An intermittent monitoring programme was carried out on Liffey Street Upper and Liffey Street Lower over a period of approximately five months in 2023. Works were monitored in order to facilitate the placement of new services and upgrades along the streets. Only excavations below 0.75m were monitored.
On Liffey Street Upper a possible earlier road surface was identified, along with eight barrel-vaulted coal cellars in good condition and one in very poor condition due to truncation by services. All the features were documented and recorded before being backfilled. No archaeology was uncovered during the excavations carried out on Liffey Street Lower due to the presence of a modern storm drain.
