Test excavations took place in advance of an approved residential development in order to assess the archaeological potential of the site. The site, comprising two plots either side of recently installed drainage infrastructure, was fenced off from its surroundings and overgrown with light vegetation. It was bounded by the Royal Canal to the south and other residential developments elsewhere. 15 evenly-spaced trenches were mechanically excavated across the site under constant archaeological supervision. Test excavations revealed that the site had been subject to significant disturbance associated with earlier construction works. A crushed stone surface with underlying geotextile survived under introduced soils in the western part of the site. The geotextile layer was generally overlying the subsoil layer indicating that the original topsoil had been stripped prior to the construction of the compound. Some field drains were identified in the subsoil though most appeared to be from the 20th century. No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of testing.
