Archaeological testing was carried out over the course of two days from 22nd March 2023 using a mechanical excavator fitted with a flat grading bucket. The trenches targeted the zone of notification for recorded monument DU014-021 (a field system), geophysical anomalies and open green space to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site. Testing confirmed the findings of the geophysical survey, in that no definitive remains of a medieval field system were observed, which may be a reflection intensive modern cultivation practice. Small-scale evidence for possible prehistoric burnt mound activity was recorded in two trenches, and these features have been designated as Archaeological Areas 1 and 2 for the purpose of this report.
Archaeological Area 1 consists of burnt mound material recorded within a field boundary that measured 1.7m in width and greater than 0.3m in depth. The true depth of the ditch could not be ascertained at this time due to water ingress. A small spread of charcoal-rich sandy clay containing some heat-shattered stone was also recorded on a ridge to the immediate east of the field boundary. This spread of material measures 2.8m in length, 1.7m in width and 0.1m in depth. Archaeological Area 2 consists of a small spread of charcoal-rich material, measuring 0.7m in length and 0.68m in width with a deep of 0.05m. |
