At the request of Mc Loughlin Architecture on behalf of The Board of Management, Presentation Secondary School, Warrenmount, archaeological testing was undertaken in advance of a proposed single storey extension, a new boiler house, maintenance room and new soft play area, required as part of the planning conditions to inform the archaeological impact assessment.
Archaeological testing of the proposed school extension and associated works did not reveal any archaeological features or finds. The test trenches (TP1-TP3) in the northern yard (rear) had infill material (804 stone) for a depth of 1.2m which may have removed any archaeological material below ground. The southern and western yard areas (TP4, TP5, SA1, TP6 & TP7) seem to be less disturbed with natural ground levels appearing at a shallower depth of c. 0.55m below Present Ground Level.
Given the sensitive archaeological location of the site and that it is within the protective zone of DU018-020398 (a mill pond) and that there is an earthwork depicted in the 2nd edition OS map, it is recommended that archaeological monitoring takes place for the ground excavations associated with the proposed development.
