Archaeological monitoring of engineering site investigations was carried out on behalf of Raheny Shamrock Athletics Club, St Assam's Church, Villae, Raheny, Co. Dublin, 5. The site investigation were required to examine the existing church foundations in advance of purchase.
Monitoring was required as part of a previous planning condition. Previous testing was carried out in 2009 by Archaeological Development Services under license 09E0054. No archaeological features were revealed but soil layers apparently undisturbed in modern times and containing butchered animal bone were encountered.
Also, archaeological testing immediately south of the site was carried out by Goorik Dehaene in 1993 who found no archaeological features but did identify some medieval pottery.
A total of five site investigation pits were archaeologically monitored over a two-day period to inspect the wall foundations for engineering purposes. The only material identified in the trenches was post-medieval in date and there were no bones present.
Although no archaeology was identified in any of the trail pits it is recommended that archaeological monitoring take place during any future ground disturbances.
