A programme of geophysical survey, archaeological testing and monitoring of Geotechnical Site Investigations (GSI) was previously undertaken within three fields (Fields 1–3), carried out as part of the wider site works and as an exercise in due diligence in the townland of Kilshane, Co. Dublin (22E0536 & 22R0251) . The results of the geophysical surveys, testing and monitoring in Fields 1–3 are fully outlined in Hardy 2023. A fourth geophysical survey was undertaken in an area designated as Field 4 (to the north of Field 3) in late February 2023 (Licence 23R0112) as part of a further phase of due diligence for the site. This survey revealed a series of possible field systems in the form of ditches and some pits across the survey area. A further phase (Phase 2) of GSI works was undertaken within this area (Field 4) in March 2023. This involved the excavation of six boreholes (BHs), ten trial pits (TPs), five soak away pits (SKs), and five plate-bearing test pits (PTs). This phase of GSI works was monitored under an extension to the existing licence (22E0536) as this was effectively an extension of the works in Fields 1–3, all of which were part of the same due diligence assessment (see excavations bulletin 2022:519).
The TPs measured 3–4.8m in length, by 0.45–0.6m in width and 2.2–2.5m in depth. The SKs measured 1.4m in length, by 0.45m in width and 0.35–0.45m in depth. The PTs measured 4.1–5.1m in length, by 1m in width and 0.7m in depth.
No features or finds of archaeological significance were identified during the monitoring of the GSI work.
