Archaeological test trenching was carried out at Kilmactalway, Newcastle, Co.
Dublin. The site was assessed by test trenching; a metal detection survey was also carried out of up-cast topsoil under licence number 23R0026. The assessment involved the excavation of sixteen test trenches within the site, each measuring 1.8m in width, with a total of 1,029m of linear trenches excavated to a depth of between 0.28m and 0.5m. The test trenches were excavated down to the natural subsoil, which comprised an orange sandy clay, gravel and stone.
No archaeological features or deposits were identified within the excavated trenches, though an early modern field boundary (C4) was identified within Trenches 16, 17 and 19. All artefacts recovered were also early modern (AD 1700–1900) in date and require no further analysis.
