Test excavation was undertaken from the 11-13 April 2023. Four trenches totalling 46 linear metres were excavated in the northern section, called the ‘Hub Zone’, while 11 trenches totalling 401 linear metres were excavated in the southernmost area called the ‘Car Park’ testing area.
The ‘Hub Zone’ area is located immediately to the south and within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for RMP DU021-011001-3, next to RPS 179. The remains of a large structure were uncovered in the ‘Hub Zone’. It is likely to be the building depicted in this area in Historical Mapping which was demolished in living memory. The upper stones of the vaulted roof of an underground tunnel/culvert was also uncovered in the ‘Hub Zone’ area.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during test excavations in the ‘Car Park’ area.
