Archaeological testing was carried out on 23 January 2023; this followed a course of archaeological monitoring of site investigations in November 2022 on site. A total of two trenches were excavated within the zone of notification for recorded monument DU018-114, a riverine revetment, to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site. The actual discovery site of the revetment is located c. 50m to the northwest of the development area.
The archaeological monitoring and test trenching in the eastern part of the site has demonstrated that, as per the cartographic sources, the site was part of an intertidal riverside up to the later 17th century and possibly into the 18th century. Initial reclamation deposits dating to the later 17th or early 18th century were identified to the rear of the cellars fronting Capel Street. These cellars were heavily degraded and of 18th/19th-century date. Extensive disturbance to these structures in the form of concrete block walls and pads was evident. The infill of modern material confirms that these buildings were extant into the 21st century. Excavation has also shown that the walls to these cellars are no longer stable.
No evidence for post-medieval revetments, medieval deposits or structures was identified in the eastern part of the site, where testing took place.
