Four archaeological test trenches were excavated on 21 February 2023, having been commissioned in relation to a Planning Application for a proposed dwelling and detached garage adjacent to and 20m southeast of No. 62 Carrogs Road, Burren, Warrenpoint, Co Down.
The proposed scheme was within an archaeologically sensitive location close to a court tomb (DOW051:031) and cairn (DOW 051:067), both monuments of prehistoric date. The proposed development site remains undisturbed and has high potential to contain buried archaeological remains associated with the nearby recorded monuments.
The ground sloped moderately from north to south. The subsoil consisted of an orange silty sand which contained significant amounts small, medium, and very large angular stone. Immediately above the subsoil sat the topsoil layer which consisted of a grey/brown silty loam. Within the topsoil, and at all depths ceramics such as Blackware were uncovered. No Archaeological deposits or features were uncovered.
