Archaeological monitoring was carried out in relation to the proposed property extension at 52 Quarry Road, Comber, Co. Down. A previous Programme of Works confirmed that the proposed development was located within an archaeological landscape with specific reference to the siting of recorded monument DOW011:016, an Early Medieval rath located to the southwest of and sharing a boundary with the proposed development area. Therefore, it was determined there remained a potential for sub-surface archaeological remains to survive within the boundaries of the proposed development which may be adversely impacted upon by construction works.
Archaeological monitoring of topsoil removal revealed a pinkish-orange boulder clay subsoil with evidence of modern and tree disturbance. The monitoring of these works failed to identify any previously unidentified archaeological activity.
