The proposal involved development works within the boundaries of lands owned by the Church of the Ascension, 25 Glebe Road Annahilt. The church is a Grade B1 listed building and is recorded on the Historic Buildings Register as HB19/06/005.
The works involved the construction of a new access from Glebe Road into the existing Parish Hall, LA05/2021/0627/F, which is located on the west side of the road, opposite the church. It is possible that the works may lie within the potential ecclesiastical enclosure associated with DOW022:002 and could negatively impact on any surviving associated archaeological deposits.
In addition, for Health and Safety reasons, to facilitate the safe movement of church attendees, it was proposed, in this phase of works, to construct the footpath on the east, church, side of the road, which is part of the agreed works to construct a new church carpark, under planning permission LA05/2021/0628/F.
It was proposed that the entire footprint of the new access road to the Parish hall and the footpath on the east side of the road be the subject of archaeologically monitored topsoil stripping. Works took place on 24 August 2023. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered in either of the two areas monitored
