Archaeological monitoring was carried out during the ground reduction works associated with the Ballybofey/Stranorlar section of the County Donegal Towns & Villages Contract 2: Buncrana & Ballybofey/Stranorlar Networks project, which included upgrades to the existing gravity sewer and rising main network, as well as works at the Navenny and St Joseph’s pumping stations.
A small number of potential archaeological features were uncovered during archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping in a greenfield area associated with works at St Joseph’s Pumping Station, Outflow and Rising Main in Stranorlar. The potential archaeological features consisted of two pits, a modern linear feature and a short section of walling, associated with former nineteenth-century buildings. An Interim archaeological report and method statement for excavation was issued to the National Monuments Service in April 2023 to request an extension to the conditions of the monitoring licence to allow for the archaeological excavation and recording of these potential features. All potential features were investigated, with the two pits being subject to full excavation and recording.
Nothing archaeological was identified at any of the other locations where archaeological monitoring was carried out.
