The archaeological monitoring of the excavation of slit trenches for site investigation (SI) works associated with the Rising Main Upgrade from Fahan Pumping Station to Buncrana Wastewater Treatment Plant, Buncrana, County Donegal was completed in June 2023. GI slit trenches ST6-4-005 & ST6-4-006 were situated within the Zone of Notification associated with Fahan Church and Graveyard (DG038-013001-, etc.) at Glebe/Carrontlieve, Fahan.
SI slit trench ST6-4-005 measured 6m in length east-north-east/west-south-west, 0.6m in width and up to 1.85m in depth. The natural geology, which consisted of coarse sand and gravel, was only exposed in a small portion of the trench under several layers of hardcore. Nothing archaeological was identified.
SI slit trench ST6-4-005 measured 6m in length north-west/south-east, 0.6m in width and up to 0.75m in depth. The trench excavation ceased at the level of a concrete sewer pipe and did not reach the natural geology. Nothing archaeological was identified.
