Excavation by at Shannonpark 7, as part of the M28 Cork Ringaskiddy Project,
Co. Cork, revealed two burnt mounds with associated trough pits, pits and linear features.
Stage (iv) post-excavation analysis is still pending. It is hoped that radiocarbon dating of the selected samples will allow more activity to be dated and the phasing of activity to be refined. The dates obtained for that site will also determine whether it was contemporary with the other activity in neighbouring sites and other sites along the scheme. Below is a preliminary bulletin.
The excavations at Shannonpark 7 were located in seven areas, Areas A to G.
Archaeological features in Area A consisted of a spread of burnt mound material and a trough. Area B (i) included a pit and possible post-hole while Area B(ii) was a pit which contained an animal carcass uncovered during Stage(ii) works and which was not investigated further. Area C included linear agricultural features, some of which are potentially related to an early 19th-century osiery depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping, two pits and a possible post-hole. Area D contained a
single probable linear agricultural feature. Area E included a burnt mound, a trough and associated stake-holes and large linear drainage features. Area F was resolved during Stage (ii) works and showed no archaeological deposits or features. Area G included three pits.
