Excavation by at Ballinrea 2, as part of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Project, Co.
Cork, revealed a post-medieval field boundary ditch system, with associated cultivation furrows. An early modern multi-phased rubble-floored structure, with associated post-holes and a drainage feature, was also recorded. Several pits, post-holes and gullies, which may be of medieval or prehistoric date, were also identified. A selection of samples from these will be radiocarbon dated.
A total of 124 artefacts/potential artefacts including glass objects, post-medieval pottery, probable gun-flint, a flint flake, corroded metal objects, tile fragments, nails, a horseshoe fragments, a saddle quern, quernstone fragments, a door hinge and vitrified stone were recovered during the excavation. Archaeological materials in the form of charred plant remains (cereal grain and charcoal) were also recovered.
