Archaeological monitoring was carried out of pipelaying works in Castlewidenham and Bridgetown Upper townlands, nearĀ  Castletownroche, Co. Cork in October 2023. Works took place within the existing roadway along Mill Road, with the route crossing the Zone of Notification (ZoN) for Recorded Monument CO026-087—- (Mill – unclassified).

Works within the ZoN were monitored, where a single 0.8m wide trench was excavated mechanically, to a depth of around 1m. A stone-built culvert was noted 0.6m below the surface of the road. It featured a grey limestone slab measuring 0.57m long by 0.55m wide and 0.1m deep, but otherwise was constructed of water-rolled cobbles and sub-angular limestone fragments bonded with a pale whitish sandy lime mortar. The cover stone was replaced after inspection, preserved in-situ, the new mains laid over the top.

No other objects, features or deposits of archaeological significance were noted during the course of the monitoring, and the works proceeded as planned.
