A 13m-long section of the 17th-century Town Wall extending southwards from the bank of the River Bandon was the subject of conservation works funded under the Community Monuments Fund scheme. An excavation was carried out along the top of the 2.7m-thick wall. The excavation revealed that the northern third of the wall was stepped in three levels, descending towards the south to a point where it appeared that a narrow flight of steps descended steeply, but had been blocked at some time. It is assumed these steps provided original access to the wall-top.
