2023:174 - RYLANE: Rylane Community Park, Cork

Archaeological monitoring of ground reductions was undertaken at the site of the permitted Rylane Community Park development between 19 and 26 May 2023. The monitoring programme was carried out in order to comply with a Condition of the Cork County Council’s grant of consent. The site was within the Zone of Notification of a ringfort. The monitored groundworks were undertaken in the north-western portion of the overall Rylane Community Park development site where a playground, 7-a-side Astro turf pitch, basketball and squash courts and associated parking are being constructed. While the ground reductions impacted only on recently introduced soil deposits across much of this area, the upper surface of the natural subsoil was revealed across two areas with a combined total area of c. 1650m², nothing of an archaeological nature was revealed.
