Testing was carried out pre-planning in relation to a proposed solar farm development on farmland south of Charleville, Co. Cork. The archaeological testing followed a geophysical survey and targeted anomalies indicated in the survey as well as control trenches and an access roadway. 17 trenches totalling 550 linear metres were excavated across Ballynadrideen and Ballynoran townlands. It was not possible to excavate additional trenches proposed for Ballynoran and Ardnageehy townlands due to issues gaining access to these lands.

Testing revealed three sites of archaeological interest, two in Ballynadrideen townland and one in Ballynoran townland. In Ballynadrideen, a ditch corresponding with an enclosure indicated in the geophysical survey was identified in trench T14 and can be taken as confirmation of the geophysical results and that the enclosure is of archaeological interest. Ploughed-out burnt mound remains in the form of pits and a trough were identified in trench T21 in Ballynadrideen and trench T39 in Ballynoran. No geophysical anomalies were indicated in T21 which was placed randomly as a control trench.
