It was proposed to excavate 6 trenches measuring 450 linear metres (900 sq.m) within the subject area. Test excavation was undertaken on 22 March 2023. The subject area comprised a large ploughed agricultural field and two smaller grassy fields, one to the north and one to the east on the west bank of the Curragheen River.

All but two (Trenches 1 & 6 unexcavated due to access issues) of the proposed trenches were excavated as planned, leading to 370 linear metres being excavated. Topsoil/plough soil depth varied between 0.2-0.4m. It comprised a loose friable dark brown silty clay with frequent small stones. In Trench 4, a second layer beneath the plough soil was noted. It was slightly more compact and lighter in colour than the upper layer, measuring a depth of 0.2-0.3m. The subsoil varied in depth from 0.2m to 0.5m across the site. In the main it comprised a light orange-brown compact clay marl with frequent small and medium-sized stones. There were patches of subsoil variation across the field comprising compact pink clay, loose stoney areas and soft yellow clay.

All anomalies noted on the Geophysical Survey (23R0082) were discovered to be related to variations in the subsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was recovered during the course of the excavation.
