Archaeological monitoring was recommended as a condition of planning for the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), pumping station, raising main and foul sewer serving the village of Castletownsend, West Cork. The works were located in a greenfield site to the north of the village, in the grounds of the castle and along Main Street. A full archaeological presence was maintained during the removal of topsoil at the site of the WWTP and along the route of the raising main southwards from there towards the village. Trenching within the village during the installation of the sewerage pipe network was also carried out under archaeological supervision. No features or finds of archaeological significance were found in any of the excavated areas.
