Archaeological monitoring was carried out on 6 September 2023 for all mechanical excavation and ground-disturbance works associated with the renovation of the ‘Armstead building’, an existing Protected Structure listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (RPS No. 357; NIAH Reg. No. 20300213) and the construction of additional features. The excavation and ground-disturbance works were monitored under archaeological supervision in order to identify any subsurface archaeological objects, features and deposits that may have been present.
The monitored works consisted of the removal of the floors and subfloor layers on the ground floor within the Armstead building and the adjoining street-front building, to a depth of c.0.3m. In addition, the overburden and topsoil in the open area (11m east–west by 7m) immediately behind (i.e., east of) the Armstead building was excavated to a depth of c.0.3–0.5m. No archaeological objects, features or deposits were noted during the monitoring.
