Archaeological monitoring was undertaken at the site of a residential development at Lisgoogan, Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare. The development consists of the renovation of an existing semi-derelict cottage, the demolition of an adjacent store, and the construction of an extension on the west side of the cottage. A new wastewater system is to be constructed and an access track to be upgraded as part of the external works.
The development site’s south-east boundary coincides with the north-west edge of Recorded Monument CL005-123002 (field system) which contains at its centre Recorded Monument CL005-123 (ringfort – cashel), which is extant. The entire site is also located within the Zone of Notification for CL005-227004 (field system),
Archaeological monitoring of the development was undertaken on two separate dates in July and September 2023. Topsoil was stripped from the yard area and along the route of the electricity supply connection. Thin, poor quality topsoil, no more than 0.1m thick, was seen to directly overlie limestone karst bedrock.
No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were encountered during monitoring.
