Archaeological monitoring was carried out at the Egg Market, James Connolly Street, Lurganboy, Cavan Town, Co. Cavan. The upper deposits of sand, gravels and concrete (C1) were removed and exposed a light grey sandy clay (C2) at a depth of up to 0.7m. This was a disturbed layer of material
with modern services contained within. Below this layer was C3, another disturbed deposit with a dark grey sandy clay with large flat stones and red brick fragments. This was excavated to a depth of 0.9m. The stone present looked like it could have been used as building stones. A building was present at this location on the 3rd edition Ordnance Survey (OS) 25-inch map (surveyed 1909 - published 1911). There was no evidence of the building (apart from the stone and red brick within the deposit) at the level of excavation.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed, however, there were seven sherds of glazed whiteware pottery, two sherds of unglazed orange earthenware, and one clay tobacco pipe fragment (cut mouthpiece) recovered from the disturbed deposit (C3). The whiteware pottery dates from the late 18th century to the early 20th century.
