Five trenches were excavated in and around the grounds of a school in advance of the proposed construction of new school buildings. Test trenches were mechanically excavated under constant archaeological supervision using a 16 tonne excavator fitted with a grading bucket. Topsoil was generally 0.4-0.6m in depth with relatively compact stoney orange/brown clay subsoil. Trench 5 was located in a scrubby area that apparently had been subject to previous construction activity, possibly from earlier phases of school developments. Occasional construction debris, e.g. concrete, waste plastic, plastic pipe fragments, was encountered and the uneven surrounding terrain may have resulted from the deposition of spoil heaps. No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of test excavations.
