Archaeological monitoring was undertaken as part of conservation repairs on the town wall at Lower William Street, New Ross, Co. Wexford. The works were carried out under a Ministerial Consent which was granted in June 2022 (Consent reference number C000658 extension). New Ross Town wall is a Recorded Monument(WX029-013005) and a Protected Structure (RPS No. NR 0139).

The conservation works necessitate the removal of an overlying bank of earth that was located along the top of the wall. Archaeological testing (E004572) carried out in 2014 established that this material dated from the 19th century and later. The bank presented as a liner, grass-covered mound that defined the southern side of a well-maintained garden. It was orientated broadly east-west and measured c. 28m long, by 1.5-2m wide by a maximum of 1m high. The bank was removed under archaeological supervision by a mini-digger equipped with a toothless grading bucket. It was carefully inspected for finds and this revealed that the bank material dated from the late 19th/early 20th century. It is likely that the bank was related to a house and open area which are illustrated at this location on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey mapping
