The client, Fredrick Bell, sought permission for the erection of a fully serviced dwelling house and waste water treatment system together with all associated and ancillary site works at Rathjarney, Killinick, Co. Wexford. The Planning Office of Wexford County Council required archaeological test excavation.
The site, a greenfield area, is orientated north-east to south-west (approximately 105m by 40m in average length and breadth) with a west triangular projection for some 20m at the north-west aspect. Test excavation was conducted on 15 October 2022. Previous geophysical survey concerning the development (Leigh 2018) identified no archaeological or potential archaeological anomalies within the area of development. Some anomalies were recorded within the area of the enclosure to north-west.
Three test trenches of 2m in width were excavated to the surface of the underlying subsoil. The trenches were designed to assess locations of greatest ground impacts as well as to enable cross-site coverage. Topsoil was 0.15m to 0.2m in depth. The underlying exposed natural subsoil was a very compact yellow to pale brown sandy clay with decayed stone.
No archaeology was encountered.
